Hope After Stroke.
Our Mission.
Our weekly program offers stroke survivors a safe and supportive space in which to work on their ongoing recovery and improve their quality of life. It also provides much-needed respite for caregivers, who know their loved ones are enjoying an afternoon with friends.
-
Our exercise program is designed to improve flexibility and improve emotional well-being. Working on breath and posture while having fun. All activities are done while seated to accommodate those with balance difficulties and mobility difficulties.
Yoga, stretch classes and chair badminton are some of the activities our participants enjoy.
-
Everything that we do during the 3 hours we are together weekly is designed to work on recovery after suffering a stroke and returning home. Keeping our minds sharpened while having fun is how our program operates and some of our favorite ways of doing that is by having a cup of coffee while playing scrabble or rummy-O with your peers.
Scrabble is wonderful for word finding and spelling and always encourages great conversations. Rummy-o is a numbers game and playing this helps with addition, recognizing numbers and their sequences.
All of this is done with the assistance of our wonderful volunteers who partner with those who need some guidance. For many they may not have played these games before and just learning something new is good for the brain that is ready to learn.
-
Our communication groups are designed to accommodate the needs of our aphasic stroke survivors each of whom has a unique journey on their road to recovery. As the stroke has affected them in one or more aspects of communication we will focus on activities that involve spelling, memory, visual and motor skills.
Our group members are encouraged to participate in all activities at their own pace and level of comfort. It is important to note that while some activities may vary from group to group, they are always designed with the individual needs of each participant in mind..
Our Programs
We are so grateful for the wonderful volunteers who help us run our program. They're a big part of what makes it so successful.
Our volunteers mostly consist of students who want to work in the field of rehabilitation, and we're fortunate enough to be able to work with local universities.
Our stroke survivors love being around the energy and enthusiasm of our student volunteers, and they are always happy to share their stories and this stroke recovery journey.
If you're a student looking for volunteer opportunities and would like to know more about what's required, please contact us.
